The idiom is 500 years old, dating back at least to Thomas More in “Four Last Things”. Of course, More was referring to the English penny, and his question suggested regard for another's ruminations. The penny was worth something back in the day.... Read the Entire Article

The LMC is worth it to me. It is the smallest denomination so I can get more "pennies" for my money and they have a lot of varieties and errors to search for maybe even the most out of any other denomination. I make a lot of money off of LMCs and they only cost me $0.01 :-)! So please keep the penny as long as possible!

It should have been eliminated after the centennial of the (2009) Lincoln Cent.

Read this article before commenting. Every reason for keeping the cent is debunked. It is written by a guy who knows what he is saying and has sources to back it up. With that being said, this thread will not be another free-for-all rehashing what we already know. It will be locked the minute it devolves into accusations of tyranny, abuse, or oppression by our government against its citizens. Play nice.

And yet ANOTHER one of these political anti-cent posts. Why don't we have a sub-forum for these posts, or better yet, just fuze them all into one post. It only takes one to make the point, not multiples, day in and day out. Sheesh. Mods: Please make a subforum for anti-(put any denomination here) posts. Maybe keep politics and opinion out of the regular numismatic forums.

The world didn't end when the United States rid itself of the blight of the 1/2 cent- and that coin was worth 11x more than today's 1 cent coin.
Part of the reluctance we have, I think, as a nation, as far as eliminating coins from circulation, is the idea that these denominations trace their lineage back to the start of the country. If we keep down this road- all coins- not just the cent will become obsolete.

It all comes down to one very basic business premise....put aside any other emotions.
When you sell a good for less than it costs to make, you must stop making it.

I think the biggest resistance to getting rid of the cent and nickel is our politicians themselves. Rounding to tens and elimination of these lower denominations is an admittance of currency devaluation. They would rather cling to past than admit the truth.
