I also love old copper, but old American copper is kind of too expensive for my collection (the prices start from double-digit dollars and only get higher).

So here's the only actual old American copper coin I have...

Some 1797 Half Cents were struck over cut down Talbot, Allum and Lee tokens. Your coin may be one of those - I do not recall seeing one with the under type so visible, however. A very interesting coin.

I concur with GERMANICVS, this is struck over a Talbot Allum Lee token, you can make out the bottom of Talbot Allum.

Yes, on my example the under type 1794 TAL token shows through with some of its lettering pretty well. If you look closely you can see the ship's top sail and the outline of Liberty's head too.
