I am starting to learn that I should be focusing on BU/high grade coins. I've bought a few things off ebay recently including a 1955-P "shotgun" BU roll of dimes. I think I am confused though on the high grade stuff vs. just being BU. If it is brand new from the bank why wouldn't it be in perfect condition (MS60-70)?

I saw another topic regarding rolls and feelings seemed mixed on opening up a roll or putting them in plastic containers.

What is the opinion on hoarding old BU rolls from the bank? How many coins are typically "MS60-70" in an unopened sealed roll? Will the paper roll cause issues to the coins given it is now 50 years old?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Chances are slim that they are original wrapped in 1955,they could have been wrapped yesterday. BU is MS60. Perfect is MS70. The paper may or may not cause issues. The way coins are stored factors in highly, temp and humidity not just the paper. When I get UNC rolls from the bank I tend to keep a few unopened, heads on one end tails on the other and open the rest looking for errors/varieties and higher grades.

In order to get a "70" grade coin, it must be handled individually from the moment of strike. One single hit against another coin will cause a mark that costs the grade. Further, a Business Strike with sufficient strike quality to reach 70 - no strike weakness is allowed - isn't common. Neither are MS70's. Bet I could show you a disqualifying mark on 9 out of 10 already in a MS70 slab. For Proofs, on the other hand, 70 is the expectation.

All the coins in a BU roll will be MS60 or better, unless it isn't a BU roll regardless of what they say about it.
Rest in Peace

One must be very careful with so called bank wrapped rolls
or OBW rolls. many sellers will try to sell you these rolls. but you can buy paper wrappers and a rolling machine
that crimps the rolls to make them look like obw's. only
experience will show you the difference. what I do with my lincoln
shotgun rolls is I put them in plastic nickel tubes without
opening them , they fit perfectly ;no rattle.
