Hi everyone,

In need of your help please. I know nothing about Trade dollars and don't know how to assess the value. Can you please help out?

It's listed as from La Prairie/St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, mintage of 181 in proof only, struck by the RCM. It commemorates the 150th anniversary of the first train in Canada. It says the issue never circulated because of a spelling error (Valide) in the English legend. I have no catalog value for the silver, but my old guide says the more common issues are quite valuable. Someone here will know more about Quebec Trade dollars and the desirability of this particular piece.

That's great chequer thank you. Where did you get this information from? I have the silver, copper, and bronze varieties. But I have no clue what they are worth.

Grateful if you could direct me to a good source to read more

I have an older copy of Serge Pelletier's (the SP in the SP# on your flip) Standard Catalogue of Canadian Municipal Trade Tokens and Notes - 1993 edition (I should update it). Someone will be by with a more up-to-date version though.

Does your catalogue give a value for the coin?

I know it's late in coming, but I have the 2008 (final?) SP Catalogue. It lists:

#QC49 - 1986 La Prairie/St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, $5
- Cu Unk $200.00
- BR Unk $200.00
- ACu Unk $300.00
- Ag 181 $250.00

I believe the old '93 Edition listed the mintages of the others, but were excluded in later versions. I won a Cu a few years back on ebay, and recently purchased the 3-coin set. I love these coins for some odd reason. Not sure what there value today is since the last publishing was 10 years ago (to my knowledge).
