Hello! I've been reading up on my 1974 proof set and would like to know if my Ike dollar is silver. Here are my questions: Is it possible to tell if it's silver without removing it from the packaging? If it's silver, is it 40%? Thanks in advance!

If it's in a proof set, then it shouldn't be silver.

I believe that proof silver Ikes were made, but they were sold separately from the proof sets.

There's always the tissue test. If you hold a piece of tissue paper over a coin and it looks white, it's most likely silver. If it's gray, most likely not silver.

I concur. This Eisenhower dollar should be Cu-Ni clad and a tissue test can confirm.

The 1974-S 40% silver clad proof Eisenhower dollar was sold individually, as was the uncirculated version. Mint and Proof sets only have the Cu-Ni clad versions.

There were 40% Ikes made in 1974, but they were sold separately and in their own packaging. Since is yours is in a proof set it is most likely not silver. I would do a tissue test to confirm.
