A rare 1854-S $2.50 was consigned to American Numismatic Rarities at the American Numismatic Association convention recently held in San Francisco.

The 1854-S quarter eagle, graded XF-45 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., will be offered at an ANR auction in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Sept. 18.

Thought to be the 10th known survivor from a mintage of 246 pieces, according to an ANR press release, the coin was reportedly the topic of rumors at the show before the deal was struck.

"What a treat it is to be among the first numismatists to see this long-hidden rarity," said ANR's senior numismatist Frank Van Valen, who negotiated the coin's consignment from a Northern California family.

The piece will be offered as part of the C.L. Lee and Allison Park Collections at the Loews Beverly Hills Hotel on Sept. 18.
