Has this just been run over by a train, or is it something else. Any help would be much appreciated.

I used to put coins on the train tracks when I was a kid.
It was great fun!
Most probably what happened to this numisamatic victim.
Nails turn out something like miniature broardswords.

The 38 Class express steam 'Newcastle Flyer' locomotives were the best for having fun with coins placed on the tracks. They had the highest axle loads.
