hi. this has been bothering me for years. when I was about ten, me and some others found a bag of these small round copperish-looking coins buried in my back yard in southwest louisiana. there were a lot of them and they were a little larger than a pencil eraser in size, much smaller than a dime to my eye and memory. thats been 30+ years ago and I do not remember any markings but its possible the edge might have been slightly thicker than the coin as if the coin had a rim, for some reason I think I remember that. they were brought immediately to my grandfather and I never heard anything else about it. can anyone help me figure out what they could have been so I can buy some or at least see a pic? thanks much for any input.

There's probably too many different possibilities what it could've been (from the description, they might not even have been coins at all, but just some kind of random metal disks - perhaps buttons).

However, if you just want something that looks similarly, get an uncleaned lot of Roman copper. They're reasonably cheap, the later ones are about the size (and color) you described (though they usually don't have anything similar to a rim), and they're a pretty cool thing to have anyway (for the sheer age if nothing else).
[Note: I'm not saying you found a bunch of Roman copper, though I suppose in principle it's a possibility.]

thank you! this will get me started at least and yes I have worn my brain out considering other possibilities, but didn't think about buttons. I have wondered if they were maybe even confederate. they didn't have button holes, and they felt like coins. I know absolutely nothing about coins except how to spend them and the internet shows really broad search results with the few search terms I can provide. I did find a few roman coins following your suggestion that I have added to my wish list since I am an avid fan of roman history. can't tell how big the romans are but like them anyway :)

If coins, they definitely weren't Confederate; coins of the Confederacy are awfully rare, and as far as I know none of them were tiny. I don't know of any old US coins fitting the description either.

Assuming they were in fact coins (which is far from certain), and given the location, I'd suggest French or Spanish; I don't know much about Spanish coins (colonial or otherwise), however.
That said, from your description, it doesn't sound like they were particularly thin, so they probably weren't French coins (small French copper coins of the 17th-19th centuries tended to be a bit on the thin side).

cool....they were slightly less than the thickness of a modern penny, felt like some kind of metal, & also similar in color to old darkened american pennies. the bag was a paper bag (in thinking about it the bag was in good condition which makes no sense having been buried) and there were a lot of them, several handfuls. knowing they were not confederate saves me a lot of time, I really need to know what not to waste time searching for. and it was a huge oversight for me not to consider french. so since both of those are out now I am wondering about colonial. they were about half the size of a regular penny. I question my memory but I think except for the edge they were kinda smooth. I don't know if this forum is a place to find out about tokens in addition to coins but I have considered that too. please give me more feedback as your time and patience permits :)

Sounds like you may have had some punch outs from some copper sheet as some of the punches are designed to leave the rim on the punch discards.Like mounting holes etc. Given the size you describe, Think of the slugs that come from the metal type electrical boxes.
As to the bag it takes long than most people think for them to decompose. Don't think you may ever find out what they were/are.
