Its me and my 1807 dime again. Thanks for the opinions guys I new it was AG3 but I was hoping to be convinced it was a G. Anyway,I have wanted this for a long time, glad I purchased it. However,I do believe I paid to much at $320, Can anybody tell me if I could have done better? It is worth $500 at G in CoinWorld. What do you think Thanks

I won't say you paid too much, because I don't think you paid too much.

I don't think that is the way to look at this. You paid what you paid and now have the coin. If you are not planning on selling it, trading it but just using it for yourself and your collection, it is worth whatever you want it to be worth. Regardless of $1, $10, $1,000 be happy with your coin. It is OK as far as I can see.

AMac44, when I get home to night, if I can remember, I will grab the Grey Sheet and see what it says. Jim

$500 to 600 in G4. Not sure if this one quite makes G4, but certainly worth $320. I echo what Carl said - a great piece of numasmatic and US history, scarce and a great conversation piece. You are fortunate to own it. Now find a draped bust half and quarter to go with it.

I don't know what its worth but the pictures sure are deceiving, I could have sworn I was looking at a half or a dollar coin when I first glanced at the photos

Thanks for the replies guys. Like I always tell people,I am a collector not an investor. I love this dime,I have the half,quarter,1/2and 1 cent,in my type set. Only the Half Dime and dollar to go...someday. I paid what I paid, and I am happy with it. But with record keeping,it is difficult to put a value on an AG dime, what I paid for it isn't nesaserely what it's worth,I have to write something in that space and I was hoping to get opinions. Havent seen one in coin shops in years and ebay.....well. So I am reaching out to CC Thanks

RedBook (2007) lists this as $475 in G-4 and $225 in AG-3. The book is old, and it IS RedBook, so I would not necessarily go with that value; however, it is the only source I've got that lists an AG value. I think the relative value is probably valid. 225 is 47-48% of 475. I would go with the reference you use for coin values, and assign this coin approximately half the G-4 value.

Bilbo, isn't mine better than half a G-4,which is a fair-2. maby mine is AG-3.75? Wouldn't the portrait, and eagle detail compensate for the weak rim and stars? Don't mean to be picky but it is my nature.

The thing that bothers me about that coin is the numerous deep distracting marks on the obverse of the coin. That being said, with early type I usually just throw any price guides out the window and pay what I'd pay for that coin. And for that coin, with those pictures, I'd probably pay around $225-250. Honestly, I would have passed for a more problem free example, without the digs, and ponied up a little more for it.
The most important thing is that you like it, since it will be in your collection.

I definitely agree that the coin is a full AG-3, not a Fair-2. However, values don't directly relate to the grade numbers. (A XF-40 isn't necessarily twice the value of a VF-20, which isn't necessarily twice the value of a VG-10 ... even though that was the intent when the Sheldon scale was introduced.) In some cases an AG-3 is worth 75% of a G-4, and in other cases worth 25% (or less). It does appear that for this date of this denomination, in the current market, an AG-3 coin is probably worth half as much as a G-4 coin. I wish I could find another source besides RedBook to see if the ratio holds true. I don't have a Graysheet (and am not sure if it covers AG for 1807 dimes), and am not a big fan of using auction results as "facts." As a side note, I think its value will increase much faster than most coins that one might purchase today for $320.
