I was digg'en in my ole coin box when I discovered these two coins. The first one is the 1891-O Morgan that I believe is the "1891-O VAM-1A" coin. Could SuperDave or anyone else please take a look at the pic to see if I am right or wrong, thank you. unfortunately, this coin looks like it had a date with a brillo pad in the past! :( Image: morgan.jpg38.47 KB The other coin is a 1868 Shield nickel with a unusal date strike. I looked on the internet and came up empty on this one. It looks like it was struck on another date. However, afew of the numbers seen crooked. Image: 1868a.jpg19.02 KB Image: 1868b.jpg47.06 KB Could anyone please help me identify this oddity so I can go ahead and label my 2X2 correctly. Thanks

According to "The Shield Five Cent Series" by Edward Fletcher, your Shield nickel looks exactly like the FS-003.4 listed in here. I'm pretty confident that that's what yours is. It's a URS-3 meaning 3-4 known. Also listed in the cherrypicker's guide. It lists the prices at XF-$75 AU-$125 MS63-$195. If you want, you can go to shieldnickels.net and join the yahoo Shield nickels club. Howard Spindel is actively on there and he's the Shield nickel expert. He can provide more information on it for you and confirm if it's a FS-003.4. If your ever interested in selling it, contact me.

That was a wealth of info Amazon99, thank you so much!! I did as you advise, joined yahoo's Shield nickel club and sent Howard Spindel a email. I'll keep you guys posted on his answer. If I ever sell it, I'll let you be the first to know Amazon99. Bryan1315, I too think these 1A strikes are rather nice. It just gets my goat that this particular morgan was cleaned in the past! Oh well...

Here is a update on the Shield nickel if anyone is still interested. Howard is 99% sure that the attribution is FS-003.4. So, good call on those that guessed that! For those that use the Cherrypicker's Guide, does it supply practical info and has it helped you any? I'm thinking a buying it, just want to know before I throw cash at it. Howard is maintaing a website ( http://www.shieldnickels.net/snv/snv.html), interesting place for those collecting Shield nickels. Maybe some of you also have a Shield nickel varity that you could contribute. I'm going to contribute my coin to be photographed for his FS-003.4 reference.

I have read my CherryPicker's guide 20x from front to back and now have 30 of the coins. The tenth coin that I found was a Lincoln 1917 DD that's been in my folder for years, that I had no idea was there. Well worth the money.
It's my favorite coin book series.

BTW Saltydog, your coins are 'variations' and not 'errors'.

Congrads on the find saltydog. So are we going to get to see the rest of the coin? The cherry picker's guide is a great book. I would recommend it.
