Hi everybody,

As someone who specialised in the history of the Carolingians, I'd absolutely love to own a coin from one of the Carolingian greats (Pepin the Short, Charlemagne, Louis the Pious, etc.). Now I finally have the chance to purchase a Louis the Pious denarius for about 60 euro. A lot of money, sure, but worth it for a dream coin and perhaps not even that bad of an investment.

That said - I'm still not quite adept at spotting fakes - especially from pictures. Could you guys please help me out?

Thank you very much.

Highest regards,

Michael

Edit: Personally, in my humble opinion, it looks genuine. Just making sure.

The style seems a little off to me, but even if genuine, I would pass this one and save up money for a better coin. Louis temple coinage are one of the most, if not, the most common of Carolingian coin types, so better ones are definitely out there that are not too expensive.

I always enjoy an opportunity to post these so I hope you don't mind.

Those are beautiful. Amazing coins compared to the one I posted.

I think I'll take your advice then. That said, I hardly ever come across them - even though the Netherlands is the country where these coins are most proliferate. They're very rare purchases.

I'm thinking the style looks off compared to your example because this might be a Dorestad (or perhaps Melle) mint.

Perhaps. I'm not well versed in style differences among Carolingian mints, neither am I an expert on Carolingian coins in general (that would probably be a different story if these were more affordable!).

Since you live in former Frankish territory you might want to consider going out and metal detect for Carolingian coins. I know I would, for sure!

I've come to this post a little late in the day, but I've been studying and writing about these Carolingian coins for the past 30 years, and am delighted to help people understand them better. The first coin is a perfectly good specimen of the Christiana religio series minted between 823 and 840 - unfortunately with this particular one it's not possible to say where. The best place to buy one at a good price is ebay.fr, where they come up regularly. Dealers always charge more, and fixed price sales always ask more than auctions. If you're not fussy about a little chip out of the edge, they're very affordable.

Simon, I hope you'll continue to enlighten us with additional posts in the future. There is a core group of medieval enthusiasts here. While I don't collect that area, I greatly enjoy the pics and information.
