I think it's on the border... check the PCGS online/photograde images... there is closer to VF35 than XF40 wear on the obverse, but the reverse is closer to XF40.

My rule is that the reverse can't RAISE the grade (it can certainly lower it) so I'm saying VF35.

Love this coin...it's a one-off...not another year like it.
Shield added in 1860... couple of rim ticks but overall
honest wear...VF-30 $50ish. Enjoy!

Just short of an EF40, I agree with others around VF30-35 range

Well, the most popular feature to separate VF's from XF's, the ribbon/curl separation, doesn't pass the test here. The bottom of LIBERTY, the headband, the hair above ear, and tips of feathers are definitely short of "XF details". Plus, there is no hint of luster.
