Should I clean it?

If so, how?

Thank you.

I use soap, water, and a wash cloth to get off the accumulated finger oil and coin dust. That's all.

Don't try to alter the color. The only way you can do that is by stripping the top layers off.

Very nice find for CRH! JonNickel made a good point, don't alter the color by striping off layers!

Never, ever use soap and water to clean a coin. All soaps are different and so is water. Some soaps contain almost anything and could ruin a coin. Water is different everywhere. Some contain Chlorine, some contain Fluorine, some are from wells and contain almost anything. Using SOAPS and just Water could well ruin a coin. IF you want to do anything, just dip in Acetone or leave alone. Not a fantastic expensive coin but why ruin it?

I've been cleaning coins with soap and water for years without any coin being damaged. I should add that I dry them off right afterward.

I do not like the look of feel of a coin from circulation with years of finger oils and coin dust on them. They just plain feel and look dirty.

Looks like a detector find. I'd just use soap and water. This is going to sound weird, but if you can find the "Cool melon" hand soap, it works GREAT for coins that are dirty.

Something I always prefer using. There's only several stores out here that carry it, but it works terrific for coins.

Plus it smells nice

Nice find!

I would not clean it. If you feel you must, use acetone.

You have to ask yourself, is there anything to gain by cleaning it?
From the looks of that one I'd say no, so if it were me I wouldn't clean it.

Nice find though.

Thank you all for your replies.

I will leave as is for now.

In hand, I would guess that it is a metal detector find.

Take care!!

As a detectorist, I can tell you that yes, that nickle has been in the ground a long time.
