I have a set of $1 Silver American Eagle (1986-2004) NGC MS69 I received it as a gift last year. I'm not very facinated by the silver eagle for some reason and had only kept it as an investment. My brother had paid $570 for the set and I checked with the US mint recently how much I can get for it and they said about $425 I was hoping if I sold it I can at least make what he paid for it. What's your advice on this? I don't want to loose on it by selling it less, If I have the money I can get coins that I really like. Silver is not so good as an investment. If I need it as an investment I'll rather have a gold coin. If I keep it I guess I should carry on the set and continue to add each year, in that case would you recommend adding MS69 or Proof for it to have a better value in the future?

As I reply to your post, I sit here in my humble leather chair caressing my pocket change a 1997 SAE & sucking down a michelob pondering how to respond to you. Need-Your-Advice
I have been collecting this great coin now for about 5 years. My goal initially was to put together a NGC MS70 set, which I pretty much was on my way putting together, (#11 currently with NGC registry). But alas, late last year early this year the price for many of the rare coins ex: 1987, 1988, 1994, 1996, 1991, 2000 Mil, have skyrocketed way beyond my price range. So unfortunately, Need-Your-Advice
I have stopped my pursuit of this fine coin in MS70 grade for the moment.Need-Your-Advice
As these prices continue to go to heaven thoughts have flashed thru my mind to sell sell sell my fine collection---But alas[:0] for some reason I continue to hold on to the many SAE I do have. I stopped looking at these guys for months now, I do believe I have 2-3 sets going, my 70, and a what I call put together set(s), has ms69's, ms68's ms67's from ngc, pcgs anacs etc--but yet I cannot figure out what to do with my tiny hoard yet..I do see the prices continue to go up, even on the many I own, I would still like to finish what I started--I donno. As for your question, if you decide to sell your set, the ms69 quantity is large. Shop At home has sold thousand of sets and so has ebay, the more sets sold and put together, the less they are worth (IMHO)--So it really depends on you. Do you like them? If so continue to collect them. I am like you I preferr gold o yea YEEHAA--esp $20 saints--they are my weakness--but the SAE yea I like em 2. I do believe and I am sure others will respond to you here, others that love sae will keep 'em--look at meI have been wanting to "get rid" of my collection now since january, guess what? I still have them...

If I continue to collect them maybe I should buy proof instead of MS69, that way atleast the prices will be up. I've seen it advertised on ebay as 'buy now' but I don't know whether anybody bought at that price. Does anyone know how much its going for?
