I came across this 1995-P commemorative dollar at near melt price ... could not resist the purchase as a circulated commemorative coin fan.

1995 Special Olympics World Games - PR50/PR55

Impaired-Proof---1995-Special-Olympics-Dollar

I am not very knowledgeable of the modern commemorative series, nor a collector of them ... have acquired the MS examples of the $1 coins in recent years.

My initial reaction is the design is quite lacking in visual appeal ... and the obverse portrait of Eunice Kennedy-Shriver is horrendous.

Then I read some of the history behind this coin ... and started to draw connections to the classic silver set I generally pursue ...

First ever depiction of a living female on USA coinage ... history generally credits another individual (Anne Burke) with carrying forth President Kennedy's administration idea to foster the games ... political nepotism as Eunice (JFK sister BTW) coin was sponsored by her nephew Rep. Joseph F. Kennedy II ... who also happened at the time to chair the House committee that oversees coinage.

Featured subject controversy ... political intrigue ... historical inaccuracy ... such are the stories I am used to from the classic set.

Perhaps it was karma that this coin found me?

Nice find, David.

I appreciate your educating us about this modern issue's similarity to the dirty side of classic commemorative coins.

Interesting addition to your collection. Thanks for "connecting the dots" between the old and new.

As these pieces were issued as NCLT (or NIFC if you prefer!), I guess any coins you would encounter in circulated state would be mis-handled coins vs. being true circulating pocket pieces. (The exception possibly being the CuNi clad half dollar pieces that have minimal intrinsic value.) That said, a collection of them would make for an interesting contrast to an MS or PF set.

Can't wait to see your next one!

Such an unfortunate design. While she looked like her father and brothers, she wasn't as unattractive as the coin depicts.

Eunice Kennedy did have an extensive history with challenged children , nationally and internationally before the Special Olympics were formed and expanded nationally by Ms Burke. The Kennedys, ever the savvy politicos, knew that the Special Olympics had the potential to be just another gov't program without a "figure head."

While Anne Burke was the driving administrative force behind the Special Olympics, Eunice Kennedy was the "face" of the Special Olympics and they most definitely would not be what they are today without Eunice Kennedy's life long efforts. Not exactly "just" nepotism.

@ denco7 - Fully acknowledge with some additional reading the tremendous contributions Ms. Kennedy made to the Special Olympics.

My post was not intended in any way to denigrate her contributions to this life-long mission ... simply to state that the historical record infers her visage graces the obverse of this coin as a result of her political connections.

@ The Silver Searcher - No. It's not worthy IMHO of certification ... and would likely receive a details grade due to the obvious cleaning and rim bruises.

It will remain in a 2x2 until I decide how to best pass it along to a fellow collector who would appreciate it.
