I am at a loss, here. Is this Lucius Verus? If not, then who is it, please?

Good to see you T.C. It's Septimius Severus. Looks like a Victory Parthia reverse. Nice!

Interesting you posted this , I just finished a very good book on Septimius Severus's Parthian campaigns in 197 and 202 CE. The Romans swamped the Parthians in the war and even sacked their capital.

Thanks for that A.M. I want to have a go at this one and that helps.
I don't know about reading a book, but I will 'Google' him.

He is a very interesting figure in Roman history. Not to spoil all that googling but an interesting fact is that he raised Legionary pay from 300 denarii to 500 denarii( he debased the Denarius to achieve this) , and his last words to his sons were" Live in harmony, enrich the troops, and scorn all other men"

It clearly says SEP SEVE (Septimius Severus) on the obverse...

Do we know 'how' he died? "Fell ill and died a short time later". Sounds like poison to me.
Perhaps a little less 'scorn'?

Youy're right V.K. and when I have been doing this a bit longer I will recognise that. I thought I saw Severus and then I got 'tunnel-vision'.
Thanks, Ski.
Back soon. I am off for lunch - Italian meatballs with (English) mushroom sauce, followed by a (large) frothy Latte.
I wonder what the 'Poor' people will have?

He most likely was not poisoned , though Caracalla had tried to kill him before , He was in his 60's( a very old age for that time) and suffered from a bad case of gout so its likely he died of natural causes. In fact when he set out with his sons to Britannia he knew that it would be his last campaign. (see Cassius Dio for the more nitty gritty details)

Sear reports: "Born in A.D. 146 at Lepis Magna in North Africa" "The strain of this (British*) campaign however, proved too much for the old Emperor and he died at York on February 4th A.D. 211."
