Something that I was musing about the other day:

Going through my coin collection (hoard), I noticed that some of my coins were sourced disproportionately from circulation (actual hand-to-hand cash exchanges) versus from hunting machine-rolled boxes.

A few observations:

Cents:
1909-1939- Most (about 10/15) were from circulation, especially old ladies with coin jars
1940-58- Didn't keep track, but most seemed to be from rolls
1959-1982- I seem to get about 30-40% in change, versus 20-25% from rolls

Nickels:
Buffalo- All (60+) were from rolls; have never gotten one from circulation (no surprise there)
War nickels- Mostly from rolls, but have gotten a few from circulation.
Pre-60 non-key- About even circ/roll ratio
Pre-60 key or semi-key- All were from rolls

Dimes:
Silver- Almost all (11/12) were from circulation, mostly from working as a cashier. The other was found in my wife's jar of tips from her old job.

Quarters:
Silver- All (3) were found in circulation. Two received as change, one from my old job.

I don't consider halves to circulate widely enough to really assess, but out of the ~15 that I received during my tenure as a cashier, 1 was 90% and 5 were 40%.

Has anyone kept track of change finds versus CRH finds? I'm curious to see other people's experiences with their change!

Interesting observations ... I'm considering your input and assume you must have kept track of the source (roll find vs. change).

I have some similar data for my nickel searches ... albeit not very useful as a comparison tool to my CRH find rates ... as I have no clue how many cash (change) transactions have occurred during the time of my data set.

Anyways ... during my 7 years of nickel searching I have received 22 nickels dated prior to 1960 in commerce as change.

There was one Buffalo (readable date 1916-D), two war silver and the remainder common date/mm ... with the oldest Jefferson being a 1939.

My nickel CRH find rate has been well documented and shared here at the CCF ... I am unable to use my 22 commerce finds to compare since I have no clue how many total nickels went into my pockets during those seven years.

I actually don't have a formal tally of change finds versus CRH finds. Not worth the time it would take to maintain, IMO. I do have a good memory, and could probably tell you the story behind at least 80% of the "noteworthy" coins I've happened across in circulation. Any keepers that I get in my change usually end up in a pile on my desk until I have time to put them away. That gives me a good idea of what I've found on circulation recently, and it recently hit me just how different a pile of circulation keepers is compared to a pile of CRH keepers.
