Ever since I heard that some large percentage of British pound coins are counterfeit, I have been avidly looking for one to add to my collection. I think I've found a suspicious one. What do you think?

The design is correct for 1994 and doesn't look glaringly wrong, but the edge is more interesting.

See, there's a raised "ring" around the whole coin. Is this just normal, or could it be fake?

The reeding on the edge is most disturbing to me - it's not straight, but bending and wobbling all over the place, as if someone put it there with a sharp knife. Now, whatever did the "rings" damage to the rim might have made this happen too, but in that case I'd expect a lot more damage to the lettering than what I'm seeing. It's almost as if the lettering was applied after the rim damage was done - which would be a sure sign of it being counterfeit.

Please provide the thickness and diameter in mm and the weight in grams.

The edge beads on the right of the obverse look uneven and that's one of the warning signs.

I don't know of any edge that has a raised ridge.
The edge inscription should read NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT.
The milling looks wrong, and in some places looks vestigial.

Can you test the ring and compare it with other pound coins ?

It's 3.22mm thick, but my scale isn't working at the moment. Hopefully I can solve that soon.
