Hi everyone, I'mnew at this type of coin collecting, I was collecting mostly error coins and now would like to expand to collecting ms67-68 State Quarters and AMB quarters. Instead of buying already graded coins, I'mthinking buying the P-D rolls from the US mint and looking for high grade coins in the rolls and then sending off to NGC to grade and slab. Here are my questions.
1. Is that a good plan ?Better plan?
2. Seeing water spots on coins now, will that hurt the grade?
3. What should be my key things to look for when I am pre grading these coins?
Thanks in advance for all your help.

Collecting State Quarters is great. Collecting graded State Quarters, not so great unless you decide to collected graded silver proofs. Let's do the math

A P&D set is going to cost you $32.95 from the mint. 2 $10 rolls, if you pick a gradable quarter from each, you are into it for $13.45. Sending in the coins to be graded by PCGS-NGC will be $20-$30 each. Let's say $25 you are now into 2 graded coins for $63.45

A quick glance has most graded State Quarters in MS69 (which by the way is rather difficult to find in rolls) going for $10-$15 each. So you have in essence spent $63.45 trying to find and grade coins that will end up being worth $20-$30.

Hey Denco, I agree with you about doing the math...I did, and if you look at the AMB's the average value for MS-68, which is what I am looking for, P or D's are 80.00 per coin, starting with 2011-12 and newer ones are 50.00 but I believe will go higher in time. The State Quarters P-D's are average 180.00, you just have to find rolls that havent been opened. Tough

Also, NGC and PCGS and Auction houses show what these coins sold for and the grading companies show what the MS68 's are worth. ebay is selling slabbed for alot of money right now as well.

As I said before, business strikes are very....very difficult to find in high grades. The planchets are fed into the presses in bulk, shot out in bulk, rolled and bagged in bulk, hitting against each other all along the way. That is why MS68-69's are so rare and command those prices. Proofs and Mint set versions are handled individually and are more common in higher grades. Thus the lower retail prices.

You can try, but I personally think that it is like playing the scratch ticket lottery. You can easily spend $500 trying to find that winning $400 ticket

I agree 100% with you and I am really appreciating your input and wise words...thats why I also need to know what to look for in the coin before I send them off. I have a 10x loupe which I read somewhere they use 5x or less,,I just need to know what to look for. I have found 1 coin out of 20 that is clean as a whistle and has a mirror like shine, its NV AMB and a S mint. Today only worth $50, I get a discount for the type of membership so the cost is lower to grade. Do you think I need to look further?

With all due respect, yes. You need to be able to grade a 68 on sight, and you need to understand Condition Rarity before you throw your money away. The first 200 PCGS MS68 State Quarters listed as Buy It Nows on ebay are all below $25, and some of them are 4-coin sets.

If you don't know exactly what you're doing/looking at, submitting to the TPG's in hopes of 69/70 grades is a fool's game designed to separate you from your money. Just my humble opinion. Don't believe me? Look at all the MS-68/69 coins on ebay (any modern type) for dirt cheap.

I am in no way saying, much less assuming, that you don't know how to grade a coin.
However, to be able to successfully grade any coin, in any series, requires looking at hundreds (even thousands) of coins.
Also, your stepping into a whole new realm when it comes to grading MS and proof coins accurately.

I've been collecting for over 37 years now, and I'll be the first to admit I'm not a pro at it. I'm usually right on the money with circulated coins, and 75% on MS coins up to MS-65. Anything over that is a whole new ballgame.
When you get around the MS-68+, now your counting scratches and hairlines. Where are they located? Eye appeal? etc.
