Andrew- you can clean a very dirty coin but must take extreme care in doing so. technically we are not supposed to, but most of us do. you need to know what chemicals work best on certain metals without damaging the coin. another words , educate yourself on coin cleaning.
copper is the hardest to clean without changing it's color. if it's just a little verdigris; use Verdi-care. if it's dirt try acetone with q-tip and or tooth pick. but if it's a carbon spot, your finished. there is nothing you can do about that. and if it's corrosion I've heard of olive oil, vinegar, peroxide, etc. experiment but not on anything of value.
