"pitting" On Coins

captainyesterday555 Valued Member United States 129 Posts	Posted 03/03/2015 8:31 pm I am very new to the ancient coin market, and trying to see what elements of a coin call its authenticity into question. I've pasted a link to an NGC certified Septimius denarius on the bay, and I don't have the slightest shred of background knowledge to question that, but is this 'bumpy' surface typical for a denarius? Looking through pictures other denarii posted here and on Forum, the surfaces don't look like this one. Just trying to learn how to evaluate, and any advice is most welcome. Augustus Maximus Pillar of the Community Italy 1790 Posts	Posted 03/03/2015 8:44 pm First off to collecting Ancients. The coin is genuine beyond a doubt. I am no chemist but I will say that being buried for nearly 2000 years does a number on a coin's surfaces. Pitting and crystallization of silver coins are common. If I were you, I would pick that coin up in a heart beat. P.S.-Anyone feel free to educate me about the specifics of pitting though. echizento Moderator United States 23731 Posts	Posted 03/03/2015 8:52 pm The NGC gave the coin a 2 for the surface due most likely to the roughness of the surface. Normally the surface doesn't look that way unless there was some type of environmental issue or when the coin was cleaned a harsh cleaning material was used. I suspect that's probably the case with this coin. Overall the coin is very nice, but not a high value one. Report this Post to the Staff
