I picked up this coin recently to add to my OFEC collection and would just like confirmation the information from the seller was/is correct. Also, would this be listed under Byzantine Empire? Anyway, here's the info given to me (sorry about the horrible pics, my regular camera is on the fritz):

Byzantium, John II AE half tetarteron 1118-1143 AD

Christ, standing, facing, wearing a cruciform nimbus, Pallium and Colobium, raising his right hand in Benediction and holding the Gospels with his left. IC - XC across fields.

Reverse: +Iomega; Delta;#1028;CPi;OT, bust facing, wearing a Crown and a jewelled Chlamys, holding the Labarum with his right hand and a Globus Cruciger with his left.

"Byzantine Empire" is a perfectly acceptable name for it, in common parlance. There are some scholarly types who disdain the name "Byzantine", quite correctly pointing out that what we call "the Byzantine Empire" was in fact a historical continuation of the eastern half of the old Roman Empire. Though they spoke Greek rather than Latin, these Eastern Romans always considered themselves fully Roman; they never woke up one day and said, "Hey, you know what? Let's call ourselves 'Byzantine' from now on!". The term "Romaion Empire" is often used by such people, "Romaion" being the Greek word for "Roman" and a name that actually appears on numerous Middle and Late Byzantine coin types; you can see this name used on the Wildwinds homepage, for example.

As for the particular ID, it sounds correct to me; I can't actually read enough of the obverse legend to ID the emperor properly, but what I can see is not inconsistent with a half-tetarteron of John II, from the Thessalonica mint. The reference number in Sear is 1954.

An excellent resource to validate an attribution is
http://www.acsearch.info

If you entered John II tetarteron it pulls up 23 examples. I very much see the similarity between your piece and a piece that Pegasi sold per:
http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1410097

BTW, if you do start using ACSEARCH you can get really creative with searches. For example if you enter:

Alex tetr -star* -bull*

you would find all coins in the database that start with ALEX, also start with TETR (i.e. Alexander Tetradrachm) but do not have star or stars in the description, and, do not have bull, bulls, bullet or any other word starting with bull. My possibly convoluted explanation aside, you can enter very long and complicated search criteria to narrow down the number of results.

Enjoy!
Paul
