I don't collect gold coins myself. But the easiest way to figure that out is pick up a RedBook and browse through it. I'm pretty sure you can get some of them for close to melt, depending on the condition of course.

More like $135-145 for problem-free VF. (In gold dollars a few light scratches in circ grades do NOT qualify as problems). I feel the best values in the gold dollar can still be found in the later date, lower mintages. There were 1,600 gold dollars minted in 1880, but the Red Book lists a VF at $175. These dollars were kept in higher numbers and better average condition than the Charlotte and Dahlonega dollars, but the mintages are similar, and the price doesn't reflect my oberservations of their scarcity. As far as the 'cheapest US gold coin' you won't find any cheaper than that already mentioned $5 gold bullion coin. But you have to consider those coins.

If you're willing to accept damage or ex-jewelry, the price goes close to melt. I picked up an 1875-S $2-1/2 for $125 a few months ago, when melt was $80. A nice pocket coin (shiny XF, with only a little marking in the reeding and nothing on the faces) but a little small.

Best thing to do is go to a coin show and walk around asking that question. Eventually someone will have a beat up, messed up, common Gold coin for a really cheap price.

Spider5689,

When you say they sell for around melt, is that based on the pre-holed weight, or on the post holed weight? Those things are pretty small to begin with.

He's not talking about the old dollar ones, that you could usually buy holed for around $80, he's talking about these http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ory_rn=13238 And the mint just raised the price on these to $99.00
