Dear forum colleges, I have a question, a difficult one I think, because I can't find a way to solve that problem.
How can we interest the next generation, who is mostly interested into internet, Nintendo, and hanging on the streets, to be collectors as well?
Are we the last dinosaurs on numismatics?, or is there still hope that we can bread a new generation of coin fanatics, collectors, and those who are interested in something that is more than just something to spend in the gambling hal?
I stand open for all ideas, they are needed, if we don't want to follow the dino's in a few years!!
In the past years that I am "active" as a collector, I tried to motivate some youngsters, but not always with success, I think I have got about ten kids interested, half of them is still interested in the hobby, and three of them got "real" collectors, (one of them my own son), but..
Is there a way to get them into the hobby?, will they continue with it?, What can we do?, I Hope some of you have anny ideas abouth it?
Greetings, Carl

We have created this forum to be as family friendly as possible to attract younger members and support their interest in numismatics. It was our hope to have a forum where parents would be happy to have their kids participate. We plan on approaching the school districts here to distribute flyers throughout the schools this year for kids who have an interest in coins. Our forum is working with the Boy Scout organization in sponsoring awards of coins to be earned by Scouts. This was a tremendous success this past summer and we hope to continue it into the regular scouting year. Not too shabby for being launched only 6 months ago. Plenty more to do, but I have no problem with designing a flyer for anyone to distribute to youth groups, schools, or any other organization you can think of that could attract our youth. Just let me know.

No, because it isn't written yet. I'm hoping to start working on it tonight or tomorrow. It depends on how I'm feeling. I want to get it done before school starts here on Sept 6 and hopefully earlier for those districts that start school sooner. I'll let everyone know when I have it together. Any contributions to this project are welcome. Anyone who has idea of what should be included should email their suggestions to me at susan@coincommunity.com. The forum membership will get a chance to review the final copy prior to distribution.

Cachink! An Idea!! Well, How I got interested in this fascanating hobby is when my grandpa gave me a rare coin and has a tremendous value and he told me not to sell it but to store it and give it to younger generations when I grow oLD( A VERY long time) So I thought if I collect more and more itll show the generations of our family. Most of my cousins in my family collect coins. The idea is if we give a coin not used in normal days to a kid like a Wheat cent or a Morgan dollar and tell the young ones a fascinating story like " Your Great grand uncle used this dollar coin to pay for his milk" or something like that.

Susan?
If you want, I can send you a few little motivation sets from this side, I used to give those away on coinmarkets here when I had a table, they content a 1, 5,10 and 25 cent piece from Wilhelmina 1948, the only four types minted after wwII from that queen in the Netherlands.
I can make you abouth 50 sets if you want those?
Greetings, Carl

Carl, that's very generous! I want to wait to get anything together until MorganFred is back with us. He is our Scout liaison and I want to get his opinion before getting anything together. We also have the option of offering contests here for kids (any collectors under age 18). Your sets would be great for these also. I anticipate having more younger numismatists here with this school year (hopefully).

Hi Carltromp, we have been struggling with this for many months. If you look back to some older threads you can see some of what we have done. Many folks do stuff locally, lot's of us supported COINFEST this summer that ND put together and it is aimed squarely at young folks. Some are doing things with schools, giving talks and giving coins away to young folks. I have sponsored two or three "contests" with some success on the forum I am thrilled that you have resurrected this subject at Summers close. Many great ideas have been suggested and I look forward to contributing however I can. We have some young folks on the forum and we should work at keeping them interested. They can have a big impact on their peers as well. Come on Forum members, let's get the fires going! Mike

That is an easy thing to do, Every youngster under 18 on this forum can send me his adress (by mail), I will send him/her a serie of Juliana 1980, that's the last year we used the 1 cent piece here, after that we rounded every thing of to 5 cents. Every kid over 18 who want's it has to send a serie from his own country in return IF ND want's, and he can use them for his next coinfest, I'm willing to support it with a few original mint sets as well, I have several double sets from the Netherlands, Netherlands antillies, and Aruba. He just have to give me a note. Greetings, Carl.

After giving some thought, I believe they will seek it out on their own, In good time. When we were all younger, we all had different taste, and with all the opportunity for other interest, somehow we ended up collecting one way or another. I believe this is the way it has laway's been. They will get older and life will leave them with a hunger to have a hobby. Coin collecting is the most popular, so it will have to cross their mind.

The one thing going on right now that wasn't just a few years ago that will spark some collector interest is the new designs for the quarters and nickels. I mean, we went for years with the same old tired designs so who was inspired to collect anything from circulation? It almost seems to me that for kids, it has to start with pulling things out of circulation. We can now look forward to the next State Quarter, and the next new nickel. This might help to lay the foundation for more advanced collecting in the future.

Yep Carl, that's a good question....as soon as I wrote that statement, I realized oh boy, here I am thinking just about us here in the U.S. again. I do need to learn to look beyond the end of the nose on my face someday! Shame on me! (especially since my ancestry is The Netherlands!)
