All I can make out on this coin, and I may be wrong, but it looks like "LON DON CIVI TAS". I have seen that on hammered pennies (like my avatar). Is this an English penny? 16mm. Identified - moved to British forum - Sap

I'm hardly an expert, but I think it is an English penny, from the second half of the 16th or, perhaps, early 17th century. The other side's legend looks an awful lot like "ROSA SINE SPINA" (though some of the letters are only barely visible); sadly, I can't see much of the other letters (which would've helped in determining a more precise period). Heck, I can't even properly compare; pictures of pennies of this type (bust/shield) are surprisingly hard to find properly (even the usually helpful Numista has only one, for a very late issue which this one doesn't appear to be). Here is my wild guess. Elizabeth I, Penny, Tower Mint of London, No date, Coronet, 1567-1570. A Rose without Thorns in the City of London for sure.

Thanks january1may, that info helped. Here's my guess at this point: England, Elizabeth I, 1582-1600, reigned 1558-1603, AR Halfgroat (16mm). Hand mint-mark, E.D.G. ROSA SINE SPINA, crowned bust left, two pellets behind / CIVITAS LONDON, shield on long cross fourchee. The example I saw is not much better than this one, so I'm not completely sure yet.
Edit: looks like a mint mark 2 = 1602

My guess: Elizabeth I penny, 6th issue, 1602 - the figure 2 at the top of the reverse is the mintmark and also the date. Spink #2587. Catalogued £30 in F in my 2009 edition.

Thanks NumisRob, I was editing my post at the same time you were posting. Not in the greatest shape, but I am very glad to find out what it is and I like it.
