The second coin in the lot that I got for TC. It is very worn but the legend IMP starts under the bust. Interestingly, there is a connection with the legend to Pescennius Niger see:

http://www.forumancientcoins.com/nu...20ivst%20avg

On acsearch/wildwinds the coin has been classed as R2/R3.

Septimius Severus Denarius.
Emesa mint, 195 AD.
IMP CAE L SEP SE-V PERT AVG COS II,
laureate head left /
VICTOR IVST AVG,
Victory advancing left, holding wreath & palm.
RSC 739-740 var. (Unlisted with left facing bust.)

Solid Denarius of Sept. Severus. Yes, there also is a connection with that usurper and Parthia. Parthia supported Pescennius's claim to the purple. After Pescennius had been defeated Severus turned his Legions lose on the Persians and sacked their capital of ctesephion and then ravaged Mesopotamia. Go Rome!

They are two nice little coins. I love it when a coin has some history to it. I find nasty soldiers spearing some poor bloke who has fallen off his horse a little tedious.

very interesting is the reverse inscription with the two interpretations : Victoria iusta Augusti :a fair (just) victory for the Augustus
Victoria Iusti Augusti :a victory for Iustus Augustus .albert

Aww man wait till Martin sees this! He is going to tell ya all about it. Martin is probably one of the worlds leading eastern mint SS specialists.

I question your reading of the obverse. I believe it to be an earlier COS I rather than a COS II obverse. Compare with my COS I obverse die, which I believe to be a die match.

Tc-On-A-Roll---Septimius-Severus

The VICTOR IVST AVG legend is quite enigmatic though not particularly rare as I will illustrate with a selection of coins from my collection.

It first appears in the A.D. 193 issue ending AVG and come with IVST AVS (sic) and IVST AVG.

Tc-On-A-Roll---Septimius-Severus

Tc-On-A-Roll---Septimius-Severus

The IVST AVS die was re-used in the rare AVG II C issue

Tc-On-A-Roll---Septimius-Severus

which also contains the IVST AVG legend

Tc-On-A-Roll---Septimius-Severus

IST AVG also appears on the rare AVG II CO issue

Tc-On-A-Roll---Septimius-Severus

and again in the COS I issue

Tc-On-A-Roll---Septimius-Severus

A particularly odd variant of this IVST AVG legend also appears in the AVG issue and takes the form VICTOR IVST AVG II COS with this example being the sencond known.

Tc-On-A-Roll---Septimius-Severus

As you can see there are several reverse dies and as such we can only guess at the number of coins originally produced.

Doug Smith also has a VICTOR IVST AVG with Victory seated, minted for Julia Domna, which I am most envious of.

Regards,
Martin

For the record, Martin has given me the following for the attribution

"I would attribute as Unlisted in RIC, belongs to COS I issue, see pages 138-139, cf RIC 362 (AVG issue) and RIC 472A (COS II issue)"

I am more than happy to change the label :)

I am in awe. I am 'stunned'.

Thank-you P.P. for putting my coin up and thank-you all, so much, for ALL of the VERY interesting comments. To someone starting out (like me) it is ALL wonderful stuff!

The 'Old' CCF is back! Help and support, rather than "You naughty boy. You haven't done your homework. Go sit in the corner and face the wall."

It is great. Long may it reign.
