charles42 New Member United States 19 Posts	Posted 03/07/2015 10:29 pm i know I am not the best at grading just started collecting coins. I have books as an aid ANA, Red Book Coin World. just picked up a 1885 Liberty V nickel. did my home work before I got it. I know it is in bad shape weather damage and not worth whole lot. took it to a coin shop and he said its worth a dollar. it seems every one I bring to him all he says not more then a dollar when what I look up says other wise. of course all his coins are ngc mint and proof sets. need other input from others see what they think it is worth gonna post pictures of the coin. buddy16cat Pillar of the Community United States 1536 Posts	Posted 03/07/2015 11:06 pm He's nuts if he says that is worth a dollar and trying to jip you. 1885 is the key date and worth a hundred or so even in that condition. That is a good idea though, see what he has for sale and what he is selling for. I know the one coin dealer here will buy for lower and sell for higher than another shop around here. charles42 New Member United States 19 Posts	Posted 03/08/2015 6:26 pm thanks for all the advise I paid 80 for it to much I know butt still learning. he has nothing but ngc coins I don't even ask what there because he has no price tags on them and I hate asking for price. kinda just fell in to this from my grand father passing. he didn't have a lot a bunch of old wheat pennies not of value, coins form over sea. just enough to give me the bug. have lots of books to help me. When it comes to valuation, each collector becomes dependent upon the others interested in the same things they are. If there are many of them and the interest is significant, then the value will generally reflect that. However, you may find that the level of interest in coins of exceptionally low quality can be very limited. Also, although I don't know the facts of this particular coin, it is worth noting that one tactic of modern forgers is to heavily corrode some pieces to mask any telltale signs. You paid what you paid and that is history. But there are still collectors who will buy such a coin to fill a hole. I sold an 1885 Nickel back in ... 1991? and netted $72. I had just bought a VF-20 example for $XXX. Now, mine was my dad's and looked better than yours or the ebay example. Less that G-4. I have been told that the replacement is decent and, upon much searching on the auction sites, have not seen another as nice. In more than 20 years... So ... Shrug off the "coin shop's" opinion and learn to trust your own judgment. And begin to at least 'take under advisement' the opinions of the CCF members. Not because we are infallible... But because we have a few years of experience... AND... because we CARE! Report this Post to the Staff
