I'm currently upgrading from folders to albums. The only album I've got right now is a whitman. What's the difference between the two brands?

I have always used Dansco albums , I prefer the look of the dark brown albums I just think it makes the coins look so much better. I don't think there is a right or wrong answer here I think it is just what eye appeal you are looking for and how you would like to show case your coins.

It's mainly eye appeal.
For years I used nothing but Whitman, and then about five years ago I started buying Dansco Albums. I never really thought about "why," but I suppose they just look better to me.

Dansco albums are considered to be higher quality. But they also just look better. Its a high quality album for high quality coins.
Whitman is a close second, but I don't like the older ones where they hurt your thumbs. Does anyone remember these?

I think if Littleton was put on this survey it would have not done to well. If you don't know the difference between Whitman and Dansco, mostly it is minor. The Dansco Albums are slightly taller, wider, heavier, constructed better. Danscos are a rich dark tan in color compared to the Dark Blue of Whitman. You can usually open the Dansco Album with out hearing a page break nose. Whitman Albums usually have to be opened carefully so as not to actually break the pages. In the MidWest it is Whitman everywhere in coin stores, coin shows, hobby stores, etc. However, this is changing as coin shows become more and more with dealers from other states bringing in Dansco Albums. A long, long time ago Whitman was the only one around and especially in the MidWest since they were made in Wisconsin I think. Then many other organizations jumped in. Some caught on and many others didn't. Littleton as an example. Rumor has it that Whitman is now made in China and assembled in the US so they can still say made in USA. Not sure if that is true or not. Whitman folders, not albums, have been known to be constructed with glues that appear on the back of the slots for coins and when dampened, stick to the coins. Good to hold them in. Bad for the coin. I only use Whitman Classic Albums for all coins. Presently have over 100 of them. The main thing I like about them is the ability to purchse additional pages, gold press on letters and numbers for any pages with out anything or if I want to change something. Additional posts, album covers, etc. Another thing is I can blank out dates with a sharpy dark blue pen and write in anything I want. Due to this I've made albums of all Proofs, no proofs, etc. I don't agree to utilize Dansco Albums in this area due to the richer appearance since where I live you couldn't put such things on display anyway. Hiding a pretty looking thing in a vault is rather contradictory.

I own all of the above, including Intercept, Wayte Raymond, and some other brands still. I prefer the Dansco. I do believe it is more aesthetically pleasing but also higher quality than the others. But to each there own

The reason for my upgrades!

For (copper) coins I prefer the look of the blue Whitman Classic. But I do think Dansco is better quality. I'm most concerned with which protects BU coins better, and I don't have an answer for that.

Dansco all the way with me. I think they look better, but that may be because when I started with them, they were easier to get, and I just convinced myself od that.

I'm doing something different, its time consuming but I think it'll be well worth it. Generally I don't like toned coins, specially if they're dark. So I didn't insert my type set coins to the Dansco so far. I've heard Kointain are safe for long term storage. So I'm using an electric handpiece(the type they use in nail salons) and grinding the hole big enough to insert the kointain(with the coin). That way the album won't tone the coins and the coins are not going to get slide marks from the plastic. It takes time, I admit. But I'll really be unhappy if the set changes color so I have to settle for this.

That's a smart innovative idea! I have some of my better things in Kointains too, which in turn, are in safety flips, and then all in a long 2x2 box.
Not easily displayed though, as your set will be. I've always steered clear of albums for just the reasons you mentioned. Kointains are really nice, most of the time, you don't even know the coins are in a container.

I have to go with Dansco as well. Only recently have I switched over to them so I may still be in the "honeymoon" stage but so far so good.

I use a combination of Dansco and Intercept Shield. The thing I like about the IS albums is that they come with the slip cover. You have to buy the Dansco cover separately.
As a side note, I saw that IS is coming out with a US type set album. I am excited to start this one. I have held off on starting a 7070 because of the gold. The IS does not include the US gold types. It is not available from the dealer that I buy them from yet but he is taking pre-orders.

Jim, I was waiting for the IS type album too. IS albums are green and I really like the Dansco color. That's the only factor I didn't go for the IS.
