I was reading another silver forum. They were discussing a 2 Oz hand poured old Engelhard Silver bar that was a reserve auction a couple weeks ago. Apparently it got up to around $6,000 USD and it didn't meet reserve. It is now listed as an unreserved auction and with 3 hrs to go, is at just around $4900 on . Com. The auction # is 271792160157, if anyone wants to watch.

My question is why is this 2 Oz bar worth so much money, especially when silver is on a down swing? I thought silver bars stay very close to spot for the most part. My only knowledge of silver bullion is the common coins, we all talk about. So I'd love to hear what others say about the bar?

Older poured bars are about the only thing I will buy anymore, especially if the mint is no longer around.

I love not worrying about a ding or mark impacting value. Like anything else, it's just supply and demand. Not a lot of vintage pours out there like the one you linked.

This particular bar was a mistake. According to allengelhard.com, the serial number is in the range for 20 oz, not 2. There were less than 50 made, and this is 1 of only 3 known left to exist.

While you are correct, bullion is only worth bullion. Anything is only what the next person will give you for it. Engelhard has a huge following, so its supply and demand. There are no more of this being made, nor will there ever be.

From a numismatic stand point of view, this is like coming across a genuine 1964 D Peace dollar

This serial bar is consistent with the two ounce bars listed on the site you linked.

Yes. I'm aware the 2 oz is listed with these serials and mintage's. If you delve a little further you will see the serials for 20 oz are the same range.

Mistakes are often what make a coin valuable.
