I go to at least one major national show per year, and two or three lesser shows per year.
Doesn't matter which show I go to: sometimes I spend significantly, sometimes I spend nothing. That is despite the fact that my interests cover almost all of the numismatic spectrum.

My show strategy is always the same. Go around the whole show in detail, not buying anything, but remembering which items have caught my interest, for whatever reason.
I have a look at my cash budget, and prioritize which coins I may buy, then execute the buying plan.

My credit and debit cards are always left at home on these occasions.

I know most of the interstate dealers, at least on an established acquaintance basis, and even have lunch with them on the odd occasion.

Always catch with the guys manning the Australian Numismatic Society table, and renew my annual membership at the show.

If I buy nothing, it is always good to catch up with old numismatic friends and have a cup of coffee with them, and to meet new friends.
If I buy something of significant numismatic interest, that is a big bonus.
Either way, I always have a good time.

Transport is always easy. I use a very good and frequent public transport system to a show that can involve up to 1 1/2 hours of travelling, for no more cost than $2.50. Don't have to worry about driving through traffic, or locate difficult to find parking. Read numismatic books on the way to the show, and show literature on the way home.

Yes, SsuperDdave, it was the big NYC coin show. Or at least it was big to me. It was fun overall - but also surprising how uninterested some of the dealers were. I would have expected them to be alert and greeting everyone who stopped. I was surprised at how many didn't even look up from their smartphones, for instance. I was also surprised at how few NYC dealers there were. I'd hoped I might find a buyer for my Austrian coins, but it didn't work out well - I accidentally was misled, turned down some offers, and am now thinking about how I might sell it on my own. But I suppose I should post about that separately.

Well, MatthewVincent, by "ordinary collector," I guess I meant, not the kind of famous multi-millionaire whose collections get written up. My only expectations about going to the show were:
1. I'd be seeing something that I'd never seen before (yes!)
2. I'd try to talk to a bunch of dealers (yes!)
3. I might find a buyer for my Austrian coins (no )
I guess it's the biggest show of its type in NYC, so I'm luck I happened to find out about it.

ccarroll,
I am pleased that 2 out of 3 expectations were met!
I just got back from a 'major' (for rural Connecticut) show and did not buy anything.
But I cemented contacts and picked up on the latest gossip.
Going to a coin show without expectations can never disappoint and everything that I learn
has value.
May it be that same for you at your next show!

Horses for courses.
You go the the most appropriate show for the coins you are dealing with.
How did you acquire your Austrian coins? Perhaps that way may also be the best way to sell them.

With shows, perhaps I am lucky. With my wide ranging interest across the whole of numismatics, it is almost certain that I will find at least one coin that greatly interests me.

Thanks, Sel, but they'd been originally from my grandfather, or maybe great-grandfather, so I'm on my own here. So I'm floundering a bit.
