Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Trying to brush up on my knowledge of Carson City gold coins and I am looking for suggestions on what is a good book to start with.

I just finished Douglas Winter's book on the Dahlonega mint (2013) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Ideally I am looking for something along this vein.

As always, thanks for the guidance.

Doug Winter authored a book titled, Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint that came out in 2001. The prices for used copies of this book are high around $150.

There's also Gold Coins of the Old West, The Carson City Mint 1870-1893 by Doug Winter and Lawrence Cutler titled, copyright 1994. It is more affordable than the 2001 book. Cheapest copy on Amazon is $60.40 + $3.99 shipping

@Meadowview - Thanks. Have you read either book? I saw both of them being advertised on Amazon, but I was hopping to get feedback form someone here who owns them before spending that type of money on a book (or someone who would recommend one over the other).

I own the 2001 version.

There are 11 pages on the history of Carson City and the mint. 4 pages on grading. The bulk of it consists of an Denomination Overview, Date by date analysis (characteristics of striking, eye appeal, varieties, etc.) and rarity summary tables.

There is only one picture in black and white per date.

I don't know if this is what you're asking about but I'll share it in case you are. -MV

If you are interested in the CC Double Eagles, I would recommend Q David Bowers Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins. Also the Encyclopedia of US Gold Coins 1795-1933 by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth.
QDB gives the history of how many of the CC's got back here from European banks.

You could meet both gentlemen in person in Baltimore at the end of the month if you like. Doug will be easy, as he has a table at the show. Q. David may be more difficult, but Stacks Bowers has the auction, it's one of their biggest of the year and Q. David Bowers is *that* Bowers. He'll be there.

And he'll no doubt be wandering the bourse floor looking at coins, because he's a coin geek just like us.

@SsuperDdave - I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bowers last summer in Baltimore. I attended a lecture he give with Robert Galiette on their $20 Liberty Head Double Eagles book. Both men happily lingered afterwards to speak with the people in attendance and answer questions. It was a great experience getting to talk to someone with his level of experience and expertise.

Hopefully I will get to meet Mr. Winter at some point (and be able to afford some of his coins).

jhp2104, another great book that covers not only the gold coins from Carson City but all the denominations struck there is " The Mint on Carson Street" by Rusty Goe published 2003. I have the Winters books and the one I mentioned. Carson City gold are tough issues for most. I am fortunate enough to know a few people with complete Carson Gold collections. They sure are a sight to behold in person. Good Luck with your quest !

What do own a copy of Goe's other book, James Crawford: Master of the Mint at Carson City- A Short Life? What are your thoughts on it?

MeadowviewCollector, I also own Goe's James Crawford- A Short Full Life, I love the history of that area and I look forward to my pilgrimage every year. In addition to CC coins I also collect historical documents relating to the Carson City Mint and the Comstock in general. It adds insight to the discs of gold and silver.

Cool thankfully the James Crawford book isn't as expensive as the Mint on Carson Street one. I'll be adding a copy to my personal library soon.
