Rule of Thumb: If it doesn't look right, it probably isn't! The U.S. gold dollar is the MOST heavily counterfeited gold coin from this country. I know dealers who won't even buy them if they have been graded. Personally I have only purchased one in my 30 years of collecting and YES it was a counterfeit!!! I wouldn't touch this coin with a ten foot pole!
Well I see now that it is NOT a gold dollar, my mistake, but with all the BS in the description and such a lousy photo that is apparently blurred on purpose I still wouldn't consider a bid on this coin.

First of all the $1.00 gold coin was minted until 1889, not 1879. The 1880 has a low mintage, but so did many type III's and they do not have eagle reverses or are they so large. Now, this appears to maybe be a quarter eagle, again they were produced through 1907, not 1879 in Liberty form. The size looks about right for a Q/E. I would not buy a coin with the B.S. explanations and bad photo's displayed here. MikeP.S, the wing tips are to high and to close together for a Q/E and the shape and position of the eagle is all wrong for any gold coin I'm aware of!!!!!!!

How about one of the many worthless California replica gold tokens out there? That would be my guess.
