I've found this coin amongst some come give to my son from my father-in-law. It is probably Arabic (Ottoman?) but not very clear. Can anyone help with the identification?
That's definitely what's left of a toughra (ornate royal signature) on the obverse, so it's certainly from an Ottoman province - they were the only ones to use toughras in the Mediterranean area.
It's not from the provinces we collectors normally encounter, either - Turkey (Constantinople) and Egypt. Unfortunately, while the Arabic words "struck in" are clearly visible, most of the mint name itself is not.
My best guess for the origin of this coin is Tripoli of the West (Tarabalus gharb), in what is now Libya. KM# 81 in the 1800's Krause catalogue looks similar. I don't know when it might date from, probably 1800's or earlier - there should be a date on it somewhere but I can't see anything that looks like numbers.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
I cannot see anything numeric on it either. I had already cleaned it with a soft brush and soap water but there was no change. If I can make something else I'll post.
