I have what I believe to be a token, but not sure. The coin is small (3/8") with an Indian head on one side with 13 stars (6 on the left perimeter, 7 on the right perimeter, and '1877' on the bottom.
On the reverse side is what appears to be the Capital building with 13 stars along the top perimeter and 'One Penny' on the bottom.
Can anyone help me identify this coin?

Thanks,

MT

Welcome to CC!

Pictures or scans would be very helpful for identification.

I tried to take a digital picture with no luck. Any suggestions on how to get a clear picture of such a small item?

Hello and welcome to the forum!
Does your camera have a macro setting? The icon is usually a represented by a flower and is used for taking close-up pictures. Also a scanner can give a decent image too.

Based on your description, I can tell you what it isn't- it is not a monetized US coin. The US Mint does not mint "pennies" nor does any coin have a legend of ONE PENNY. The correct term is cent and all coins of that denomination will have a legend of ONE CENT. Penny is the common slang term, probably coming from the English pence which was also a small denomination copper coin. The term is commonplace and accepted in society as a whole but some purist coin collectors cringe at the word "penny" and many other collectors accept it whole-heartedly. It is probably a token of some sort but pics will help in figuring that out.
