Hi, Just got this 1849 Large cent ---noticed strong doubling on the reverse. Did some research---N-8 seems to be it--- 1849/8 AND DDR.....well upon looking at the Obverse I see no doubling on the 9 AND no defect to the right of the eye like on all the high grade n-8's I can find (heritage etc) I also notice that my reverse does not have any die cracks like all the others. From what I have read the doubling of the 9 is not as evident in late die state coins, understood, but if my was a LDS coin then wouldn't the die crack on the reverse be there prominently? There is no trace. So either I have a late die state obverse and en early state reverse of N-8 (is that possible) of some other variety all-together---- Anyone have any aspirin? Help!

If nothing else, the F in OF is conclusive. Yours is doubled up, and N-8 is doubled left. I lean towards Machine Doubling but I don't know this year's varieties well enough to be sure.

Not N-8, try N-27 later state with the rim Cuds from OF all around the right rim to the stem. N-27 also comes with doubling on the top half of the wreath and UNITED STATES OF AME. Your coin also shows the dull lump to the left of center on top of the C in CENT and the crumbling on the tops of ERICA. The obverse also shows the thin rim Cud from star 6 through star 10. Congratulations the N-27 is a better variety than N-8. In my book (second edition) the N-8 is an R-3 but the N-27 is an R-5.

Thanks Condor101 That's it! Rim Cuds match up with those on Heritage archives and so does the spike from the dentils near star 9. I just knew it wasn't n-8! And n r-5 to boot. Too bad about the light porosity!

I love it when a story ends well.
