Hello All,
Ok, I recently picked up 3 morgans... my first ones... I know that there is sooo much info to know about these coins that I have been intimidated by them.
I would really like your opinion on this one.
She has some light scuff type marks at the corner of her mouth and there are a few rim dings.
The reverse really intrigues me... there is a crack-like line from the star to united to the wing, another crack-like line from the rim to the same wing behind the wing to the s in states and over the top of states and of to tip of wing above the A and across the M E R and I then off to the rim again. There is also a crack-like line from the left side bow to the mint mark to the O and L in dollar... but the mark that I really want your input on is between mid right wing and wreath... I hope the pictures work... I took Metalman's advice on an early post about photobucket...

Most of the lines appear to be die cracks, but the one between the eagles left wing and the wreath is a clash mark, from the area of the cap even with the 6th star. As for a grade, off the top of my head I would say AU on the obverse, I think there might be wear on the cotton bolls and leaves, the reverse might go MS, but overall AU50 or a little better.

I was wondering if it was a clash mark... cool... is that very common on morgans?
I will see if I can get a closer pic on the cotton bolls and leaves...
Ok, first picture no enhancements... second picture I darkened with my photoshop... don't know if it would change your grade... just thought it would help...

I will have to say AU-50. The thing that concerns me the most is the rounding of the edges and the wear to the reeding. This level of wear does not match well with the appearance of the coin (in my opinion). I might suspect cleaning.

Just me.

Sheepy,

I keep looking at the coin and I can't figure out if it's my eyes or not. Maybe I am seeing edge wear that is not there. Does anyone else agree?

Thanks,

Jim

Considering the strike issues with New Orleans coins, I'd have to say that this coin has Uncirculated details. However, I agree with the dipping theory. Even if the coin had no luster, the appearance is odd and has that "dipped" look. If so, it's a shame because the strike on this coin is excellent. I don't see any edge wear.
