Hi all, This morning I remembered I had box with baggies of wheat pennies in it and I had filled my books and these were the leftovers. But then going through the books again, I noticed things I have no clue about and would like some guidance. I looked up on this site the glossary for the items but how do I tell if I come across any? For instance what is: 1) 1800-1809 Bronze Indian Head cents vs non bronze? 2) 1857-1964(cop-nckl) 3)1982 (Cop. Lg. Dt), 1982 (Cop. Sm. Dt.), 1982 (Zn. Lg. Dt.) 1982 (Zn. Sm. Dt.), 1982-d (Cop. Lg. Dt), 1982-d (Zn. Lg. Dt.) 1982-d (Zn. Sm. Dt.) and what is a 3) red cent? I saw one page on a search here and there didn't seem a visual color difference? I am sure there is, will it be really noticeable? Thanks. This group is so patient with me so far. |

Indian Head cents were minted from 1859 to 1909 so I don't understand the date reference . But the cents minted from 1859 -1863 and some 1864 cents were minted on copper nickel planchets. .880 copper .120 nickel ,, they weigh 4.67 grams 1864-1909 were minted on Bronze planchets .950 copper .050 tin and zinc and weigh 3.11 grams. The 1982 lincolns were produced both on the old alloy planchets copper and the new planchets copper plated zinc ,,and also had different date varieties for both planchet types . The easiest way to tell the difference in planchets is by weight, the old planchet 3.11 grams ,,the new planchets 2.5 grams ,, learning to see the date size difference is easy once you can compare them to each other . Red is a color description that is used to describe all bright uncirculated cents. and not an actual color as in (fire engine red) of the coin. Just a bright copper colored coin is a red cent . Wow again! Thanks guys. Very impressive and kind group I noticed. I am still a little confused on the indian head contents (don't want to get into weighing I think) but the reason I had asked was some of the whitman books I've not had those filled in. So the red isn't as much color (though the there is some difference) from what you are saying as the mint shape (sheen, lack of circulation)? I think I got it. The 1982 dates then are really only discernable by weight if I am reading this right, but the date size I should be able to visually see right off If I have one it'll be obvious? I'll do some more looking around for comparisons. Thanks again. I just went through the Jefferson nickel and Dime books and there doesn't seem to be anything worth asking a question on. The only Indians that would need to be weighed would be the 1864 since both compositions were minted in that year,, prior to 1864 they will be the copper nickel composition post 64 they will be the bronze composition.
try comparing the dates on your 82 lincoln cents the difference between the small date and large date is fairly obvious ,,if you have problems post a few pictures and we will see if we can help point you in the right direction .

Thanks so much! I am digesting all the things people tell me and trying to learn. I am onto the quarters now. No questions except one... I have just noticed my Statehood collector's album (East West Distributing) 2004-2008 volume II is misprinted. Do you know if they were all misprinted? The 2008 section reads: Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii. Gotta feeling the second Oklahoma should read New Mexico.

Argh; I went there and so promising and none of the photos from that year worked. Only some close up images of double die etc. ;(
