I have a Digitl Blue QX-3 it may be from the same co as Bryan's Qx-5, mine is a kids microscope but not as good as Bryan's. These scopes have a plastic green collar that you can rotate to 10x, 60x and 200x without changing any lens. However, the higher the magnification the smaller the view or picture. The lighting on mine is sort of dinky and not as strong. The drawback with these is getting the whole coin in the picture above the 10x mag. Clearly Bryan's has better lighting on his scope.

1, typically a scope has a field of view of about 1 1/4" at 10x as I have learned in the process of buying my scope. The reason I spent as much as I did was to have the option to add a Barlow lens. This lens will cut the mag. down, but increase the field of view. I believe the 3/4 Barlow cut the mag. in half but doubles the field of view. It screws on and off in seconds so when I need more mag. I have it in seconds.
My guess is that just like on binoculars, as the price goes down, the optic lens becomes smaller. This reduces the amount of light transfered and the field of view.

What power magnifing glass do you need to tell double dies? I'm using a x10, that good enough.
Kyle

Hate to be a little Pessimistic but the way I look at it is if you need a super magnification to see something on a coin, then whatever it is, it just not worth it. I mean a doubled coin that is only visible with 50X, 100X, etc magnification is nice but not practical. Of course that is only based on if a person is attempting to sell such a coin. If I saw a coin for sale and it was stated it was a double die but only if viewed under a 50X, 100X or higher magnification, I'd laugh and walk away. Might be nice for a hobby but I just can't see the purpose. I have numerous boxes of error coins in 2x2's but all are visible with the naked eye.

Carl, ironic that I turned on the computer tonight and read your post here almost simultaneously as I found a 1972 DDO. With a quick check, I think it is a 8-0-1 in the CherryPickers Guide. With my 54 yr old eyes and a 20x loupe, I would have missed it. Man, it is sure pretty in the scope and I will be posting a pic of it and others when I finish looking at about 1000 more. Sure appreciate your position, but I think you would love a scope.

Some people on this site said they have taken pictures through a loop and the results were good. I have not tried it yet?

1, I have heard people talk about taking pics with a camera thru a microscope lens. Are you sure about a loupe? I guess it is possible but seems pretty hard.

I saw a kid's scope in the Sunday paper ads (I think it was target or something like that). I think it was going for $99 or $150 or something like that.

Edit: Looked on target.com and couldn't find it but this might be better (and cheaper!) http://www.target.com/Carson-ePIX-D...scope&page=1

Edit Edit: Now that I think about that it only has a 5 optic and 26x-130x Digital Zoom, so it might not be that good.

Hi Bob13, I like your linen tester where did you get it. This is all about being feasible. Everyone who's involved here should go into E-bay and look at this handheld USB digital microscope camera w/1.3 mega pixels, model UDM-M200; about $100. It has a stand and software for your computer. Mag 10x, 20x 200x. I'm really tempted to buy this. What do Think? Homer

It was actually free at my local coin shop. He had them made up with his company logo on them and gave them away.

Sounds like you found a good one. However, for me if you can't see an error with the naked eye or a few X's magnification, not to interested. I've got several microscopes from my Chem labs but just not interested in coin enlargements. As I noted my only concern is the impracticality of finding something that is only visible under extreame magnifications and no one else would want. Of course this is from someone with numerous cameras and no photos of coins either.

Great idea Bobby. My wife only lets me use the linen tester while I am doing the laundry, though, darn her.
