The images, especially the obverse, give the impression that the coin has been polished. In many cases the lighting can be partly blamed for this look so my opinion isn't certain. The technical details are in the high XF range, with the reverse better in typical Morgan fashion.

This is a tough coin in Mint State but rather common in circulated condition, so if it *has* been cleaned the loss in value is not great. Value for a circulated 1886-O tracks melt with a bit of a premium.

THank you so far for the comments, it saddens me to see words like dipped or cleaned but if this is part of my continuing education so be it. THere was no mention of this when I bought the coin, I was hopeful that it was original. Moving forward what should I look for to further my knowledge of assessing coins. WHat do you look for to know it is cleaned / dipped.

many thanks

If the luster looks too unnatural then it probably has been cleaned....If this coin was original without cleaning I'd grade it AU50, too bad it isn't uncirculated because the price skyrockets past grades AU50 and up...
