Why is it that people are always advised, by those most learned, not to clean a coin; ever -- yet here we marvel appreciatively at the results of one such cleaning? Interestingly, as Zxcccxz mentioned using olive oil for attempted restorative cleanings, I developed a compound using gypsum and olive oil that actually works pretty well.

@chrsmat yes it is FR's secret sauce (partly)

@my76strat: ancients are a different ball game to modern coins. This is excellent for the green deposits that cannot be got rid of using distilled water or olive oil. It is not for BD.

Holy Shrub, Pish! You turned a 5 dollar coin in to a $50 coin. Excellent conservation job you are really in deep with ancients now. Doing great cleaning this can be very profitable, before long you will be trading in your Roman Ants for Greek Tets.

@Noob: great idea, have to practice a bit more first.

I am going through my coins now looking for candidates, if I can manage anything spectacular I will post it in another thread.

@bobbyhelmet: I could work wonders on your avatar :)
