It would be nice. Until about a year ago, it was possible -
ebay had a group called Community Coin Watch, composed of
ebay people and selected numismatists with a solid reporting system. We'd report stuff and the auction would be gone in 15 minutes.
They disbanded that group, and walked away from the responsibility to protect their customers. There is still a reporting system for general auctions; maybe that will work and maybe it won't. We at CCF have contacts within
ebay to get auctions removed, but why should we be doing their job and supplying their motivation?
Last December the President signed into law an update to the Hobby Protection Act, 15 USC §2101
et. al.. The new provisions specifically target knowing distributors of counterfeit coins, and the language clearly targets
ebay. So there's a bad time happening on
ebay right now; the counterfeiters have free run of the place.
Every auction you report which is not acted upon is another piece of evidence which can be used by the FTC as evidence against
ebay. Report the auctions you're sure of - post them here so we can confirm - and record what you've done.
I would prefer
ebay just re-implement the CCW system, but I'll see them prosecuted if that's what it takes.
ebay is the greatest danger to numismatics today, and they need to change.
