I saw a beat up example on Vcoins for around $500 and was initialy tempted to get it until I ran into two Magnus Maximus Siliqua ( that are mine now :). I am happy I passed on it though. If anyone has the money or sells a kidney, here is an astonishing Eugenius Siliqua for only $1,550 http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/c_j...Default.aspx

Quote: sells a kidney, Hey, I only need one, right? (if I did sell a kidney--not happening--, there are other coins/rulers I'd rather spend the money on anyways)

Very interesting post, Augustus Maximus.
The final decline of the Roman empire and domination in my part of the world (Germania Superior) was a slow and creeping process, much as you describe. First the forts and fortification along the Limes were abandoned under the relentless pressure of the germanic tribes, then the main Legionary Camps, for example that at Mogontiacum. By the beginning of the 5th century it was practically over, and only grass grew where Roman civilization in Germanien had once flourished..

Thank you Germanicus! The period from 337-394 really interests me. It is interesting to see how the Empire changed (and not in a good way) . I do think that if the Empire had a capable Emperor, and not a bunch of children hiding behind walls, that the Empire would have survived the barbarian invasions in the 5th century. That's just my two nummi though.

After the demise of Gratian due to a lack of money to pay his troops ( Theodosius ) would be the last emperor to rule over a united empire, after his death the empire was split again between his sons ( Arcadius & Honorius )never to re unite. Theodosius AE3 Obverse - DNTHEODOSIVSPFAVG, pearl diademed, draped cuirassed bust right Reverse - CONCORDIAAVGGG, Roma helmeted, seated, facing with head left, holding globe & reversed spear, left leg bare.
