Hi

i have just bought The 2015 United Kingdom Premium Proof Coin Set form The Royal Mint ( Proof Set ) and in that set there is a 200th Anniversary of Waterloo 2015 UK £5 with a maximum mintage of 35,000 coins. on the queens head side there is a very nice mirror finish with frosting on the raised lettering and queens head.

on the other side of the coin there a design featuring the victorious commanders, Wellington and Blucher.
with a very nice mirror finish with and absolutely NO FROSTING on this side at all.

so my question for you is. is this coin unfinished because there is no frosting on the reverse side of it. ?

the one on the left is a Cupro-nickel proof coin and the one on the right is .925 Sterling Silver proof coin

both of these coins are proof coins

Perhaps the mirror finish and the frosting in combination would have produced a poor result from an artistic viewpoint; better to just leave it. That's my guess.

A 'proof' coin does not necessarily need to have polished fields with frosted devices.
A proof coin originally was just to be the best that could be obtained from the dies, and kept for reference purposes. As such, they were not very obviously distinguishable from coins meant for circulation, and were usually very rare for their particular type.

The obverse legend is a bit 'heavy' for a Five Pound coin.

thank you for your reply sel_69l and you my be right but I can not under stand why they would put frosting on the Silver proof coin and not on the Cupro-nickel proof coin. especially when all of the other coins in the set are frosted like this one which is in the same set.

i have had a live chat ( in there on line live chat ) with the technical department and all I could get out of them was the BU finish is in the top 3rd of the coin and difficult to see.which is right if you look the picture on their website but its clearly not the case with my coin.

my coin
2015-United-Kingdom-Premium-Proof-Coin-Set-Possible-Mistake? 2015-United-Kingdom-Premium-Proof-Coin-Set-Possible-Mistake?

there is no top 3rd of my coin with a BU finish
tho hole side of my coin is BU finish .
but they are saying the BU finish is in the top 3rd of the coin and difficult to see.which means the bottom 2 3rd of the coin must be frosted.

or am I getting this all wrong ?
