What are your thoughts on the use of stock photos of coins? I think I would like to see the actual coin being purchased rather than seeing a representation of what I would receive.

I cherrypick varieties so I absolutely do not bid on auctions using stock photos or multiples coins available.

It's really amazing how many stock photos that are used on ebay or even the photos the US Mint has for media relations.
Rest in Peace

E-bay should ban stock photos on coins.

Check out this megaseller's listings. They are almost all stock photos, and there is no mention of it. I bought a few generic coins from them and it wasn't a problem, but I have a general problem with a seller not mentioning the stock photos somewhere in the listing.

It's really a buyers beware type thing. I'd make sure they had a solid return policy if they are using stock photos.

I've used stock photos for the first image on proof sets, but would never sell with just a stock photo.
