Romulus-Bronze-Disease-Treatment-Thread.

Romulus, son of Maxentius, AE Follis. Rome mint, ca 309-310 AD, 6.0g, 23.0mm

OBV: DIVO ROMVLO N V BIS CONS, Bare head right.

REV: AETERNAE MEMORIAE, Domed shrine without columns, RBP in ex.

REF: RIC 207 Rome, Cohen 6.

I've had this coin for over a week now and even though I've taken my time treating it, progress seems to be going well so far.

I soaked the coin in 2% Hydrogen Peroxide a couple of times for a couple hours. I scrubbed the coin with crest toothpaste, then boiled in distilled water and then let the coin soak in DW the rest of the time. I also picked at it with wooden toothpicks.

I think it's promising so far.

I know I already posted the coin but that was for the dealer photo and before treatment. But here is the old photo for reference.

The coin is coming along nicely. The hardest thing to do now is stop the BD from spreading. You are going to have to remove whatever moisture that is in the coin. Years ago an experienced collector told me the best way to do that is to heat the con at 250 degrees fr 10 minutes of so than placing it in an air tight glass container until it cools. This is so that no moisture leaches back into the coin. Brush the coin to remove any BD that remains and coat the coin either with wax or oil.

Hey Gil!

I was thinking considering the work done to remove the BD you should further dry further with a quick acetone dip. Then Ren wax after about 5 minutes. With out your help this coin would not have survived another generation.

Great news.
I may have to try that tonight on a few coins.

For now I'll just leave the coin soak in distilled water for a few weeks, changing the water everyday. Later on I'm going to put the coin in a silver bullion case with a gel pack for awhile. It's going to be sometime before I seal the coin with Ren Wax but I will if the coin seems to be cured for sure.

Thanks guys for the comments. Doing the best I can to cure the coin.

Never consider it cured. You may not see it for years, but it could crop up again. Just make sure that you examine it on a regular basis so that if it does start to show signs, you can be straight onto it.

I realize I have made reference to the coin becoming cured but I do realize that it may never be cured. I'm definitely going to be labeling the flip or container that the coin has had or has bronze disease and a date of treatment. Might seem unnecessary but it's useful information to know and if it ever goes back to market people will know.
