On my desk I have coins in various stages of logging.
Some are in flips, some are raw, some need cataloged.

I have a section on my desk of modern strikes that are top notch for circulation. I pulled them out of circulation and I use them as my anchor piece to judge other coins by.

So I have a few nice Nickels and I just noticed the finish on my 2011p is satin? Is that right? It's next to a 2013p which is a nice shinny finish. Are these both correct for these dates or is one not correct?
I currently can't find any 2006 - date nickels in my house or car to compare.

Can someone shed some light on this for me?
Thanks

Satin finish nickels (and coins) were struck for inclusion in mint sets from 2005 to 2010.

My thinking is with the high speed presses used to churn out millions of nickels for circulation there is going to be a varied appearance in the finished coins.

I could be wrong maybe someone else will have a better explanation.

2011 has a satin finish OBV. and REV.
The 2013 is bright and shiny.

A 2008 I got in my change today looks like the 2013, nice and shiny.
Whats up with this 2011?

Thanks

Maybe just wear. It has probably been in places that the others have not been in.

Did they stop Satin finish on coins in 2010?
Could this be an oops 2011 on a 2010 satin planchet?

Just a throwing that out there as a possibility.
That would be sweet eh?

That would be pretty amazing. Let me look at some of my nickels. Ok, I think that the 2011 one looks normal. I just looked at my 2009 nickels and they look like the 2011. So what I think is that maybe the mint is washing the planchets better or polishing the dies more. Something.

I found another 2011p today.
Seems to have the same finish.
I guess I answered my own question.
Unless I now have the only 2 on the planet.
Not that unique I guess, but it is some sort of satin finish.
