A locked topic is one that can no longer be replied to. There are various reasons we lock them.. sometimes they get off-topic, etc. Here in support, we lock the avatar requests once we go to make them, because there are a couple people who do them. If the topic is locked then we know someone is already working on it.

A poll is where you can ask a question then give multiple choices for people to answer. It's a way to get an anonymous majority opinion on something. It will tell you how many people voted for each option.

Some of the older topics you might encounter are locked because they have been "archived". When the forum first started, the servers we used were pretty small and we needed to archive old topics regularly to save space. We haven't run an archive for quite a few years, now.

thank you both for the info. I'm getting to know my way around here now [some], and besides the education I really enjoy it.
