A-World-Of-Money:-A-Canadian-Sovereign-Rarity-Of-Seldom-Rivaled-QualityThe following is a press release from Heritage
Our April 9 - 14 World Coins & Ancient Coins Signature Auction at the Chicago International Coin Fair (CICF) features a 1916-C George V Sovereign from the Ottawa mint, graded MS64 by NGC. This is a spectacular selection and also one of the finest we've seen in years, displaying fabulous golden-amber color with subtle original patina and underlying full mint bloom. Due to an exceptional strike, the highpoints of the devices are as crisp as the day they were struck and the surrounding fields are remarkably clear of any mentionable abrasions.

Charlton postulated that the rarity of the 1916-C Sovereign may be due to melting, as there are currently believed to be about 50 pieces extant. Another scenario likens the mintage of this scarce date to have been "lost at sea on its way to England during World War I, as part of an international settlement." Regardless the reason, the fact that very few pieces have been available in the marketplace within the last ten years confirms the idea that only a limited amount exist.

For the collector who has long been searching for a nearly-gem example of this key to the George V Canadian Sovereign series, that opportunity has arrived, and it may be as fleeting as the existence of the coin itself. This is an altogether superior offering that delivers on both quality and appearance, currently among the top certified examples of this significant date, and an undeniable conditional rarity.

For Canadian sovereigns, look for a 'C' above the date.

Sovereigns, be they Australian, British, South African, Indian or Canadian with a date of about 1910 or later are rarely found in less than AU condition.
For most intents and purposes, they didn't circulate after the beginning of the First World War.

To find a 1916 'C' in MS64 perhaps should not be too surprising. For some reason, 1916 'C's happen to be rare, irrespective of their condition.

Rarity is the name of the game here, not the condition.
All of the other 1919'C's should at least be of some sort of MS grade.
