Hi, This one was thought by the seller to be some "medieval" Indian gold coin. It is 12mm diameter, about 0.40gm. Anything familiar about it to anyone? Thanks! Identified - moved to Mediaevals forum - Sap

The size sounds a bit too big for a fanam, but they weren't particularly standartized, so it could still be one. In which case, yes, it would be medieval, Indian and gold. It certainly looks Indian, probably medieval, and might be gold; I'm about as far from an expert as it gets, so I don't really have much more to say.

Gold fanam, probably worth around $40, fully identified. Gold value around $15.

Sorry, Sel, but it's not an Indian fanam. Turns out it's not even from India. I searched for "gold fanam" over on zeno.ru and saw nothing resembling this piece. Then, spotting a superficial similarity with a gold mas of Johore, I searched for "gold mas" and found the basic type. It's from one of the Islamic sultanates of pre-European Indonesia, a gold kupang (or "mas") of the Samudera-Pasai Sultanate. This CoinQuest page says that they were issued from 1270 to 1515 and "are quite scarce, and carry a large numismatic premium over their gold content". The script is a local variant of Arabic, but I can't read it. You could try pattern-matching your obverse pic (the right hand side; rotate it 90 degrees clockwise) with the examples on the zeno.ru page, to try to determine the Sultan named on the coin and thus narrow down the date range.

Actually, skimming over the zeno pages myself, I think it's this guy, dating from 1571-1579, when the Sultanate of Aceh ruled the area.

Sap: Well done and thanks. Your reference indicates a value of $15 + $120.
