Title says it all. Maybe another compound was accidentally mixed to produce the flat surface appearance.

Looks sanded down. Maybe in the pocket of a carpenter or something.

Perhaps. The high points still have definition though. I considered maybe a liquid could tarnish it. However there is a separation of shiny nickel and flatness on the edge.

Possibly the die wasn't cleaned (polished) after hardening and the coins was struck through a thin layer of metal oxides on the surface of the die.

Interesting concept. I know that there have been proof coin errors (2007 & 2010) that had what some referred to as a "light finish" error, which lacked the vapor blasting finish. However, this is not a proof coin.

It's hard to see the exact texture. But What about a satin finish?

Last year for satin finish was 2010.
